Rock gardens are designed to use a small space to recreate images of rugged mountain landscapes and would make an excellent feature in any garden. The Rock Garden represents both terrestrial (plants of lower altitudes) and alpine rock gardening. Alpine plants are adapted to the harsh environment of the world's mountaintops and tend to be dwarfed, often with showy blooms: They make happy companions with most type of rocks available in Ontario.
Contrary to popular belief, a rock garden can be successfully incorporated to many a smaller garden and would be an extremely attractive focal point. Rock plants are among the most fascinating of flowering plants and offer brilliantly covered and often surprisingly large blossoms.
Zen is a "Japanese sect of Mahayana Buddhism that aims at enlightenment by direct intuition through meditation." The influence of Zen Buddhism on Japanese garden design is often conjectural at best but it is difficult not to be set at ease by the serenity and uniformity of a Japanese Zen garden. Zen gardens are in their own right a philosophy that requires deep understanding; however a carefully planned Zen garden will bring you many moments of quiet contemplation, especially if you have rather confined spaces for a garden.
Your garden should not only be pleasing to the eye but it should also have a purpose: it should be an expression of who you are.
